Professional Development Books that Don’t Suck!

When it comes to professional development books I tend to lean towards books that are less theoretical, and more practical. Practical ideas that I can incorporate into the classroom quickly is the idea book type. Keep reading for two professional development books I recently read and some resources to go along with them.

This book was VERY practical! Kleinrock shares so many different practical tips on how to become an racist educator, and how to incorporate racist and anti-bias teaching practices easily into your teaching day. The amount of ideas and practical lessons or activities made this my favourite professional development book in a while.

This website also has a bunch of companion resources and printable freebies to go along with the book. My class just finished doing the “I Am From” poem (see picture below). An idea I got from this book!

Shifting the balance: Upper Elementary book cover
I have a LOT to learn about the science of reading, and early reading skills. Since I teach special education for older students I was really looking for a book that focuses on reading skills, but with older students because that’s where my students are at. I read the first shifting the balance last year, and it was great. This one is just as good. There is also a podcast to go along with this book.
