Data Literacy in Special Education and ESL Classes

1- Breaking Down the Standards

When thinking about data literacy and data management in special education you should be asking yourself

‘What are the MOST FUNCTIONAL things that students should know from this unit?’

I always break down the most FUNCTIONAL standard, and try and break that standard down to teach the foundations.

I’m from Ontario, so all my standards are from the Ontario curriculum. You can do this from with standards that you need!

2-Model, Do, Model, Do

The next thing that I find to be very important is to co-create models together for EVERY lesson. Every lesson in this unit has an anchor chart, which is great- however I always find that when I actual co-create the anchor chart with students the understanding builds so much more.

I model, do together, model, do together, and then by the fourth round of that, students should be able to do it on their own or with minimal assistance.

The image is an example of the modelling of this pictograph.

We worked on this pictograph many times before students were ready to try it on their own!

3- Partner Pages are Key

We always complete a page or two of PARTNER work, where students can work together and learn together in a very systematic and regimented way.

This promotes collaboration and sharing ideas. I am alway so surprised when I see students working together and building those resiliency, problem solving and collaboration skills together!

After these kinds of tasks, students are more able to do their independent, individual task at hand.

4- Use videos and read a louds to support learning!

At the end of the day, sourcing materials for our students can be tricky and daunting! When you f ind a great resource that you can use for years to come- it’s worth it!

Currently, I have a FULL year of math bundle for Grade 1 and am working on ALL the other grades (from 1-8). Check back often as I am updating every single day!
