5 CHEAP SUMMER FUN IDEAS…for teachers!!

The glorious time of the year is among us, SUMMER TIME. This is the first year since I began teaching (and getting summer’s “off”) that I’m not working full time. I used to work at camps every single summer. I just don’t have the energy for that anymore, but I look on those memories very fondly!

This is the first summer that I’m just CHILLING!! I want to acknowledge that many teachers in many different regions/areas of the world do not have that luxury and need to work their summer jobs to stay afloat. I recognized that I’m blessed to be able to take this time off to rest and relax.

For those of you that are able to take the summers off of work to recharge, I’ve gathered my top 5 tips to having a CHEAP AND FUN SUMMER!!!

1- READ A NOVEL: I started reading during the pandemic, and absolutely love it. I usually check out books through my local library, or use my kindle to read on kindle unlimited (kindle unlimited is under $10/month so I feel it’s worth it for me!). Reading is such a calming practice, and I love getting lost in a story and the emotions that follow.

2- COFFEE IN COOL LOCATIONS: I know this sounds weird, but sometimes I drive out to cute locations to have a coffee. I might also bring the same book from above over to the cool coffee location. Priorities. The best part of this idea is that its cheap and you can find a good coffee shop in every city!

3- SUMMER PICNIC: This can be as bougie or as cheap as you want it to be! I’ve done it with McDonalds sandwiches, or as classy as sparkling water and a charcuterie board. You do you, boo. I’ve got friends with little kids so doing this activity by a park is a good idea. ORRR, if you want a break from the kids in the summer you can go by a lake or field without a park (no judgments here!!)

4- MOVIE NIGHT OUTSIDE: Ok you can either do a cheap drive in, OR you can set it up outside in your backyard. Grab some snacks and enjoy!!! I really love the idea of the drive in, but I also would be down to do the DIY version of a backyard movie night too. This is a flexible idea with or without kids.

5- DAILY WALK: The best part about summer is the slowed pace. When the school year starts, I hit the ground running and feel like I don’t have any down time at all. The summer months are a great way for me to be able to take the pace back, and relax.

These are the five cheap things that I do every summer to be intentional about unwinding and relaxing. My only goal for my summer break is to RECHARGE. We can’t pour from an empty cup, so we really need to be intentional with taking time to rest.

When the end of August hits, I’m hitting the ground running for another year of exciting learning and growing in the classroom. For now, though, it’s CHILL TIME.

Let me know how you unwind and relax!!
